Morning Star, Evening Star

IMG_0546

This is quite possibly my favorite star so far!!!

While there is really only one basic element to this block (Half-Square Triangles  - HSTs), it still has lots of impact! The design really comes from the use of color – you’ll have two “lights” and two “darks”, one each for the morning and evening.

What you’ll need:

  • Morning Star Fabric
    • Light
      • 1 Square 4″x4″
      • 2 Squares 2.5″x2.5″
    • Dark
      • 3 Squares 2.5″x2.5″
      • 1 Square 2″x2″
  • Evening Star Fabric
    • Light
      • 1 Square 4″x4″
      • 2 Squares 2.5″x2.5″
    • Dark
      • 3 Squares 2.5″x2.5″
      • 1 Square 2″x2″

What to do:

First, the center of the star.  Using the Light 4″ squares, make 2 HSTs (directions **HERE**).  Square to 3.5″, and set aside.

Next, make a pair of HSTs from the 2.5″ dark background fabric squares. (It should only take 1 square of each color.). These 2 units should square up to 1.5″.

Then, make 4 HSTs in the Morning Star light-dark combination, and 4 HSTs in the Evening Star light-dark combination Each of these units should square up to 1.5″

Finally, lay out all of the finished HST units with the remaining 2″ squares as shown. Stitch together the two indicated side segments and attach to the center HST.

Stitch the rest of the units together in rows, then stitch the rows together. The result should be a 6.5″ unit that will finish to 6″.
